An Interview with Luka Cosic - Intern turned experienced developer

Luka joined Sandfield as an intern in August 2018. Since then, Luka has gone on to establish himself as an expert developer. He completed his studies as a Computer Science and Statistics double major at the University Of Auckland and graduated at the end of 2018.

His main interest is programming, but otherwise, his second biggest interest is finance. His other interests include maths/statistics, engineering, and table tennis.

We caught up with our teammate to get some insight into what life at Sandfield has been like for the past four years.

What do you do here?

I'm a full-stack developer in the Origin team, taking care of Prixcar in Australia. I started as an intern and quickly went full-time tackling a variety of projects. We're nearing the end of a large internal project for them that'll modernise how they operate their business.

What have been some of your greatest accomplishments during your 4 years here?

Probably building a full iOS and Android app from scratch for Ports of Auckland with a small team. From the beginning, we had substantial ownership of the project and that really helped us develop transferable skills around the whole lifecycle of creating a solution for a customer. We were talking directly to the client & stakeholders and implementing that feedback back into the product. The app is capable of running partially offline so it was a great challenge from a technical & architecture perspective to deal with keeping a local and server-side database in sync.

There's just a great culture where everyone really gets along and there's no drama, which is impressive at Sandfield's size.

What's one thing that surprised you about working at Sandfield?

There's just a great culture where everyone really gets along and there's no drama, which is impressive at Sandfield's size. Sandfield puts in the effort to help create those relationships with your coworkers with events and Friday drinks.

What's your favourite way to unwind after a busy day at work?

Definitely doing some tennis rallies with a few friends or going out to try new restaurants around Auckland city.
