Origin, Sandfield’s supply chain and logistics specialisation, has released the Origin Logistics Technology Outlook 2026. It’s a free, interactive report on how logistics operators in New Zealand and Australia are using technology and where they plan to take it next.
This is the second year Origin has run the survey. The 2026 edition looks much more closely at AI. It draws on answers from senior people at logistics service providers on both sides of the Tasman.
Why we run this research
Sandfield has been building software for New Zealand and Australian businesses since 1989. Origin is the part of Sandfield that works with freight, transport and logistics operators every day. Through the Outlook, we give the industry an annual picture of where technology is working, where it isn’t, and what operators plan to do next.
What the report found
Most operators are getting ready for a big round of system change. Nearly six in ten expect to replace three or more systems in the next year, and 68% plan to spend more on technology, up from 52% last year.
The operators happiest with their technology have systems that talk to each other. But joined-up data is still rare. Only a quarter of operators can see every job, its status and its cost in one place.
Delivery is the biggest risk. Only one in eight said their last major implementation landed on time, on budget and as expected. The report argues that the leaders deliver in phases and keep improving, rather than betting everything on one big release.
AI use has nearly doubled. 28% of operators now have AI running in production, up from 15% last year. But only 7% can point to a measured return.
Why it matters beyond logistics
The report is about logistics, but much of what it found will be familiar to any business running several core systems. Integration, a single view of the business, phased delivery and AI with a clear return are the same problems we help clients with across Sandfield.
Free, interactive and open to everyone
The full report is free to read online, with no form to fill in. All the data is shown as interactive charts, and the report includes the results for every question in the survey. The Origin team also gives its view on each of the six key findings and what operators can do about them.
