Microsoft has abandoned Silverlight and all other plugins in Metro IE (Windows 8)

Posted by Jonathan Clarke - 20 September 2011

Microsoft has effectively killed Silverlight and Flash with its announcement that Windows 8 Metro (the new user interface) will have no support for plugins.

This means no compatibility for Silverlight or Flash based solutions in Windows 8 Metro.

Microsoft's move will further accelerate the demise of both Flash and Silverlight. Apple had been a lone voice in it's stand against plugins in it's iOS browsers. Now it seems Microsoft has joined it's ranks.

This development should come as no surprise. For the last two years we have believed that any Silverlight or Flash projects should be undertaken with extreme caution. This news is entirely consistent with what we expected to occur as the trend towards HTML5 based solutions continues to gather momentum.
